circle of life

When I was young, my parents, relatives, and family friends always taught my sister and I to focus on school and worry about boyfriends and marriage later. I find it interesting how, when you're done school and have a career going, their minds shift. Their advice keep coming, but questions start rolling in, too. While I was in school, the question was, "so what are you taking?". Followed by an, "oh... (if it wasn't nursing), you should try to get in to nursing...". Once I finished school, the question was, "when are you getting married?". When I did get married, the question was, "when are you having kids?". When we did have our child, the question was, "when's the next one was coming?" or, "why aren't you pregnant yet? You really should have another one now...". I especially love it when my aunt, who doesn't have kids, gives me advice on parenting and stuff... I know she means well. Perhaps, it's because my relatives all come from large families. My nanay has 7 kids all a year and a half of each other. It's cool when we all get together because we are 4 generations of women - in one room. My aunt from Toronto (the eldest on my moms side) had a stop over here last weekend on her way to the Philippines. She says to me, "you know - I'm a great-grandmother now". Huh?! I was mentally srambling thru all us cousins trying to figure out who was old enough to have a child...This grandson of hers, my cousin, who I swear was still 7, is now a dad...obviously, he's older, but since I haven't seen him in forever, that's how I remember him to be. I guess that makes my nanay a great-great grandmother. How cool is that?!

I find it interesting that although both my nanay and this new baby are on opposite ends of the life spectrum, they both need the same type of care.

  • I wonder if they ask because they're concerned or because they can't think of anything else to talk about and just want to make conversation!!!

  • there you go! because they have no other topic of conversation and really ought to mind their own beeswax! i got an email from my mom today, asking when will i work for the city (nice stable city job). she's been asking me this for over 10 years... like i'll change my mind!

the "you ought to do this with your life" comments disguised as questions from relatives got too old for me long time ago. so either i ask them back... "well, when are you going to grow back some of that hair you lost?" or i just stopped going to the functions. can you tell i got some "isyus"? :-)

i love my relatives. live and let live.

  • I like your new skin :)

And believe me...as a 35 year old single woman...I get it all the frickin' time.

Next weekend is my parents' 40th wedding anniversary. And with my niece now married and pregnant, you can ensure that yours truly will be bombarded!
